Chemical Indicator is a sterilization process monitoring devices designed to respond with a chemical or physical change to one or more of the physical conditions within the sterilizing chamber. CIs are often used to detect sterilizer malfunction/failures resulting from improper loading of the sterilizer, incorrect packaging, deficiencies of the sterilizing agent, or malfunction of the sterilizer itself An example is the substance called methyl yellow, which imparts a yellow colour to an alkaline solution.
If acid is slowly added, the solution remains yellow until all the alkali has been neutralized, whereupon the color suddenly changes to red.
